I hadn't seen that Chesterton quote before but I was trying to say the same thing in my "work to live not live to work" post - http://theylaughedatnoah.blogspot.com/2017/06/jd-work-to-live-not-live-to-work.html

And I would be surprised if anyone were surprised by the quote, Adam Smith's book states it in the title "The Wealth of Nations" Not the people in the nation but the 'nation state' as an entity in itself!
