Conspiracy Theory

How about this as a scenario? Alistair Campbell arranges for the McBride/Draper emails to be leaked to Guido, in order not only to mortally wound both M & D (and neutralise Charlie Whelan for some time to come), but mainly to destabilise Gordon Brown ("how could he not know", "it came from Number 10's system", etc) so that a fresh leader can be installed in preparation for the 2010 General Election. "A cleansing of the Augean stables - New Labour has put its house in order - renewed commitment to our core programs - it was always about policies, not personalities - our narrative was temporarily hijacked by psychologically flawed mavericks" and so on.

Has Guido been used?

Has Guido been used?

No.

Do expand, old chap - unless you're Guido himself?

"Has Guido been used?"

Two things:

1. If it gets the finger of blame pointing toward McBrown then I don't care.

2. Implies that Campbell can actually control things. This end of New Labour is very different to a decade ago. Then, they had a fair wind and nobody would believe that Nice New Labour could possibly be as bad as that other lot.

Now many people suspect they are worse.

Agree they're worse - far worse. They claim to love us and actually treat us like farm animals. My jokey theory is based on the notion that New Labour's last slim hope is to ditch Captain Ahab before he takes the Pequod and its crew down with him.

Great, pleased to see him go. The problem then for New Labour is, Who?

I am not the first anonymous.

Alistair Darling? With Charles Clarke as Chancellor? I'm sure you could come up with something better, I'm no Westminster-watcher. NL's strategy should be the policies-not-personalities one, especially considering the personalities of Blair (now clearly mad, though I thought so 10 years ago) and Brown. Not that I want NL to win - and not that I trust the New Cons either.

Could they be that sure as to who would win the ensuing leadership election? You get strange things happening in leadership elections. Who would have predicted John Major, or IDS? They might end up with someone even worse than Brown (if that's possible).

I don't think there's a big conspiracy. Its an 'end of times' event, when governments get isolated from reality, and the electorate. The Tories were the same in the run up to '97. Tho I don't remember any Tory trying to suggest Tony Blair had the clap, or John Prescott's wife was unhinged.

Surely it's Blair that was/is unhinged. The Demon Eyes thing backfired, because it was an inconvenient truth.
