I read through the Guardian link and thought.... what's all the fuss? That painting looked rather nondescript and nobody would look twice at it if it were not for the explanation. So it has nothing to do with the painting and everything to do with the subject matter. If it needs an explanation, it is not art.
Cannot remember any fuss when Grace Jones did "whiteface", always seems to be a one way street, whether it's cultural appropriation as of course according to the liberal left black people, God forbid wash my mouth out, people of colour cannot be rascist.
