I've had pay-as-you-go for years, not just because I'm a low user but as a protection against those telephone scams that instantly charge you hundreds when you hit "reply".

I have a base mobile on pay-as-you-go. Hardly use it and they charge something like 40p a minute. It's just for emergencies. I'd not use a mobile for many reasons, including that in your post. Skype's not perfect but it will do me.
