André Léon Marie Nicolas Rieu is a Dutch violinist and conductor best known as the founder of the waltz-playing Johann Strauss Orchestra. Rieu and his orchestra tour worldwide, often playing in stadiums. He resides in his native Maastricht, where he also regularly performs at the Vrijthof.
As the founder of the Johann Strauss Orchestra, he has succeeded in making classical music accessible to a wide audience and has inspired millions of people with waltzes and music from opera, film, musicals, operettas and traditional melodies and he does it with a touch of humour talking with his audiences and sometimes playing unusual choices as can be seen below.
