It's often argued by the gun lobby that we'd be safer if we all had guns - "just let them try and get me NOW!"
Actually, it seems that the rate of homicide by firearm is only very loosely related to the level of gun ownership. Below is a table I've put together using Wiki data from here and here:

Interesting. It looks like England/Wales is the place to be if you don't fancy being shot. And if you strip out Sarf Landan, the rate for the rest of the country is probably nil, the occasional rampaging taxi driver aside.
Same in the USA - the violence tends to be localised, which is why the "solution" to many problems is simply not to live in those neighbourhoods.
I'll need to get Lord T and Joe Huffman to see this because they quote entirely different statistics, showing that gun control states are where the most violence is.
The NRA is fond of saying that it's not guns that kill, but people. Begs the question, so what are the people like? Looks like you're safer if you speak a Germanic language.
Perhaps the South Africans are better shots?
