A winning move for New Labour?

What if New Labour's next General Election manifesto were to contain a pledge to hold a straightforward, binding referendum on British membership of the EU?

  1. Might work with some left-leaning people but too many distrust and hate Labour to listen to anything they say these days.

  2. But last time they promised a referendum on the EU Constitution.

  3. We won't get one (not the big one) from the other two parties, either. Maybe revolution is inevitable, then. I'll have to keep my passport up to date.

Cynicism in the country would grow by a factor at least 10.

  5. If I believed them, I'd vote for them, but why on earth would we believe them this time?

They have form now for breaking straightforward, binding, manifesto committments.

Say what you please, so long as it's phrased politely and is not libellous or legally proscribed. Fact, reason and wit are keenly welcomed.
