Whose country?

"Citizenship in this nation is is not a spectator sport," says Karl Denninger, as he tries to get more people to sign his petition to stop Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac being made vast burdens of the State.

I hope that is true for the USA, and I wish it were true here. Are we deluding ourselves when we talk of "our" Government?

  1. It never ceases to amaze me how sniffy the liberal intelligensia are about the USA, when you compare the amount of democratic input the average American has vs the average Brit.

Americans can vote on a myriad of local issues/officials. Taxes are set at State or even county level. Americans have infinitely more control over their own environment than we do in the UK. Look at the issue of rubbish collection. No-one wants bi-weekly collections, but that's what we get, whoever you vote for. Lib/Lab/Con, all the same locally really. Councils are run by the unelected officials anyway. Now if the officials were elected as in the USA, well it's a different ball game.

Say what you please, so long as it's phrased politely and is not libellous or legally proscribed. Fact, reason and wit are keenly welcomed.
